Ichi The Killer December 17th, 2002 The latest installment is a fine piece of work that comes to you all the way from the land of the rising sun, Japan. A fine film called "Ichi The Killer." Good luck finding this film as it was given to me to watch from a friend of mine was convinced that I would like it after my stories about the movie "Vulgar".
Well he was right. The story is about a group of Yakuza called the Anjo group and more specifically the weirdest guy in the group Kakahara. This is a man who is so turned on by torturing people that it even made me cringe. With scenes like those of a man suspended by fishing hooks while Kakahara poured hot boiling oil all over his naked body but not until after he really tortured him. Or a scene that shows Kakahara cutting off his own tongue as a gesture of apology.
With so much ultra-violence in this movie it was really hard to see it for the comedy but I did. With moments of sheer brilliance like those right out of "Evil Dead," this movie had me laughing my ass off (when I wasn't flinching from the grossness). Did I also mention that the story of Ichi himself is quite interesting in the fact that Ichi, is a very, VERY, mild mannered man who is being manipulated into killing Yakuza bosses and capos by a former Yakuza who was kicked out of the "Syndicate" (And I don't mean the Scott DaMore clique). Ichi is being fed lies by Jiiji (the former Yakuza) so that he will do all of the killing for him and he can take over the crime scene in Japan.
Throw in a few of the most vicious rape scenes this side of a snuff film and you have the formula for what it is that makes Japanese films what they are.
The days of Akira, Godzilla, and Ultraman are over and the days of Ichi and blood and ummmm.....rape is upon us. (frightening)
